I see that statement now as a signal searching for understanding but realization not having occurred at the time. So I have this strange experience on re-reading my book of finding pieces of knowledge that I cannot say I truly possessed. I believe it was necessary to leave the Tavistock in order to come into possession of this knowledge.

I want to quote another passage from a lecture entitled “The clinical significance of transference”:

A patient described a mother who could never take any of his concerns. He was a man with passionate feelings, but his mother would always say to him, “Yes, yes, darling”, and quickly change the subject. This quality of his mother’s absolutely exasperated him, for it was a manifestation of her inability to bear any of her child’s anxiety. He described a mother who seemed unable to cope with any demands from her baby: once she found herself responsible for her baby she just dumped him on to someone else. This for him was the unbearable response. Now I think it likely that his mother really was like this with my patient. Accordingly in the transference he perceived me in the same way. He was sure that I could not bear any demands from him, and he was certain that I would drop him early on in the treatment. [p. 110]
